December 05, 2009:

Notices have been sent to the owners of 70,000 plots of uncultivated farmland, to handover their lands to the government.

“The plots of land will be taken over by the government if expeditious measures are not taken to cultivate them,” said Raveendra Hewaavitharana, Commissioner General of Agrarian Services.

He noted that a great loss is incurred on the government as these lands remain uncultivated.

"Landowners have evaded their national responsibility by not doing so and measures will be taken to handover the land to other individuals for cultivation purposes,” he said.
