December 06, 2009:

India won the final test against Sri Lanka by an innings and 24 runs today to clinch the three-match series 2-0 and secure their place at the top of the test rankings for the first time.

India's spearhead Zaheer Khan took three more wickets to finish with five for 72 as the visitors were bowled out for 309 half an hour into the final morning.

Left-arm Zaheer dismissed overnight century maker Kumar Sangakkara on 137 in the day's opening over, killing off any hopes Sri Lanka had of saving the test after they resumed on 274 for 6 still needing 60 runs to make India bat for a second time.

Zaheer then dismissed Rangana Herath cheaply for 3 runs and overnight batsman Nuwan Kulasekara on 19 to record his eight-wicket haul.

India wrapped up the tail in 7.4 overs to seal a 2-0 series victory that saw them displace South Africa at the top of the test rankings.

India had won the second test by an innings and 144 runs to open up a 1-0 lead after the opening test ended in a draw.
