December 09, 2009:

Laws pertaining to the local Government elections should be amended, says the Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils Janaka Bandara Tennakoon.

“The laws that are currently being used for the Local Government system are obsolete. Due to this, avenues through which income can be generated have been restricted. The people too are facing many difficulties as a result.

"We hope to amend these laws and hope to forward them to Parliament. Meanwhile we hope to amend the laws pertaining to the Local Government Elections. Through this the people will be able to identify their representatives,” said the Minister at a media briefing in Colombo today.
