December 07, 2000: The vehicle in which the chairman of the Nochchiyagama pradeshiya sabha was travelling, was fired upon at Pothanagama in Anuradhapura.
“The incident took place around 11.30 last night close to the cemetery at Pothanagama,” said Senior DIG Range 4, Jayantha Gamage.The PS chairman had escaped unhurt but the vehicle had been damaged, said the police officer, who added that a special police team had been deployed to investigate the shooting.
Meanwhile, a UNP party office in Galewela had come under attack.
According to UNP MP of Matale district Alick Aluvihare, the attackers had come in a double cab around 2am to carry out the attack.
“We have called police emergency number 119 and informed of the incident,” said MP Aluvihare.
However, according to Galewela police, an investigation had been made but they had not come across any such situation at the said location.
